ABOUT ECHO

HOW DID ECHO START?

The ECHO Project began as a way to meet local health needs by linking teams of expert specialists in an academic center with primary care physicians in rural communities. Specialists and primary care physicians will become a learning community, where the latter receive tutoring and feedback from specialists. Together, they manage to participate in a teaching / learning process in which real situations of patients are analyzed in order to find the most up-to-date evidence so that primary care physicians can handle cases that require specialized knowledge.

General practitioners in cities and rural areas have limited knowledge of medical specialties. These doctors, without being specialists, are consulted for problems of specialized pathologies, so they are forced to refer these cases to specialized centers that are often far from their places of residence. In Ecuador there are serious limitations in the number of medical specialists in most specialties.
